Understanding ISO by freelance photographer in Dubai

Today we are going to discuss one of the jargons in the field of photography.  Understanding all of them at once is not an easy task. Being a freelance photographer in Dubai, we are sharing our experience with the help of this blog. In this blog, we would like to explain about “ISO”, one of the most confusing jargons. However, we are trying to make you understand how they are applied and what effect can be obtained through these settings.  ISO, Camera shutter speed and aperture are the three factors for exposure.

As we know that ISO in general stands for International organization for Standardization, However, this term was carried out to standardize the camera light sensor sensitivity for the film speed. This allows us to shoot with the same ISO on different camera with same camera exposure.  ISO reference is the same for both digital and analogue camera. For digital camera, it is the light sensor and for the analogue camera, the light sensitivity of the film used. In other words as a freelance photographer in dubai, we can say that increasing the ISO means allowing more light to come in and decreased ISO means the less light allowed to enter into the camera. With over 10 years of experience, we have experienced the analogue film camera as a freelance photographer in Dubai. While using the film camera and using the film means you will be stuck with the same ISO until you finish the film roll.  However, we using a digital camera give us an additional feature of changing the ISO during the shoot. We can change the ISO for each photo clicked as per the light settings.

As a freelance photographer in Dubai, we suggest maintaining a balance between the three factors of exposure that are ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture. If you increase ISO then you have to adjust the shutter speed and aperture accordingly to get the right exposure. This calculation and estimation come with experience and practice. The more you practice it the more confident you will be to get clear and sharp pictures. However, being a freelance photographer in Dubai we share the basic or he thumb rule for adjusting the camera setting according to the changes in ISO, Shutter speed or the Aperture.

Changing the shutter speed to one step means doubling the current ISO value. For example, if the current value is 100 then increasing the ISO means it will move to 200. If you increase the value of ISO to two step, which means from 100 to 200 then 400. With experience as freelance photographer in Dubai, In this case, you need to adjust the aperture or the shutter speed to avoid underexposed or overexposed pictures.  In the above case where the ISO value is increased from 100 to 400, we need to maintain the balance and adjust need to reducing the shutter speed from 1/125 to 1/500. The exact number is always depending on the lighting at the venue.  Without the proper balance in the ISO, the picture may become grainy or underexposed (dark) or maybe overexposed (too bright).
